1. What is Greenstone Structural Solutions? How long has it been around?

Greenstone Structural Solutions is the exclusive Canadian manufacturer of this unique composite technology. Greenstone utilizes galvanized steel and EPS to achieve a structurally insulated composite panel for exterior, interior and below grade walls, interior partitions, floors, and roofs.

Greenstone’s Structural Solutions’ technology is certified by Intertek, QAI, the BMEC and the Florida Hurricane Test Lab. Greenstone panels can be used to achieve National Energy Code requirements, and are Energy Star Compliant.

The Greenstone Solution is a unique patented process utilizing the power of composite technology. Greenstone panels start with opposing double steel frames which are bonded with Expanded Polystyrene (EPS). The manufacturing process results in a thermally broken light weight building product that provides structural framing, insulation, and a vapor barrier in one. Panels are seamlessly assembled on site in four foot sections. Rough openings for doors and windows are framed during the manufacturing process. Each Greenstone building is designed in-house for your project.

2. What is Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)?

Expanded Polystyrene is the lightweight rigid material made by expanding polystyrene resin with steam. It is used in the construction industry for insulation and void fill for walls, foundations and roofing. The use of EPS as thermal insulation gives the Greenstone panel the following advantages:

  • R-Values are consistent and stable due to the closed cellular structure
  • Energy efficiency
  • Components are rigid and lightweight for installation
  • Structural stability when paired with steel studs
  • No growth of bacteria
  • No food value for termites and other common wood eaters.

Conventional batt and blown-in insulation may lose up to 50% of effective R-Value due to compression, dust and moisture retention. Even Urethane foam loses its R-Value over time. The R-Value of EPS remains virtually unchanged over your building lifespan.

4. Does Greenstone Structural Solutions have in-house plans?

Due to it’s extreme flexibility, the panels can be incorporated into virtually any house or building design utilizing standard engineering design practices. 5. Does the Greenstone panel require special or different materials for finishing the structure?

No! In fact, most finishes require less work than old-fashioned wood construction.The 16″ on-center steel stud members allow any standard exterior and interior finishing materials to he attached to the panels. Cement based plasters can be applied following manufacturers’ recommendations.

6. What about changes and field modifications?

Using the right tools and techniques along with common sense and good construction practices, modifications can be accomplished with ease. Review our assembly manual HERE. Knowledgeable technical assistance onsite, via phone or e-mail is supplied for every project.

7. Does the Greenstone technology have an approved fire wall assembly?

Yes! Greenstone has been fire tested with thermal barriers for surface burning characteristics, smoke development, room fire tests, and hourly fire test ratings, as per building code requirements. Panels have been tested as a wall system with gypsum wallboard thermal barriers for 15 minute, 1-hour, and 2-hour fire ratings. Most codes require a 15-minute minimum interior thermal barrier. Fire tests have proven that EPS gives off fewer toxins than conventional wood framing.

8. Have building officials approved the use of Greenstone panels?

Yes! Greenstone is widely accepted by Authorities Having Jurisdiction. If the product is new to your area, Greenstone Structural Solutions will provide all necessary documentation.

Some projects/regions have additional requirements for high wind load, heavy snow loads, high seismic activity, or any combination of these. Greenstone panels can be engineered to meet these additional requirements effectively.

9.Will I need special engineering?

Greenstone Structural Solutions is an engineered building assembly specific to your project; similar to pre-engineered steel structures. Actual engineer seal requirements vary from region to region. Greenstone will be able to assist you regarding the specific requirements in your region, based on your building classification.

Special designs and circumstances may require extra reinforcement. If special engineering is required, we can assist in finding an engineer for your area, or work with your preferred consultant.

10. Who can I get to build for me?

If there are no experienced Greenstone builders in your area, a competent builder/contractor would be able to complete the project. On site technical assistance will be provided for first time builders. Thousands of satisfied customers have built their own homes with a little help from friends and some technical support from Greenstone.

11. How can I get an estimate for my project?

Our standard policy is to provide estimates from dimensioned architectural drawings that include a floor plan, elevations with rough opening sizes and a roof plan. Project location is required for structural calculations based on climate zone. In most cases we adapt customers’ plans to our system in-house. The more detail we receive, the more accurate the estimate

12. Once I decide to use Greenstone, how do I place my order and arrange for delivery of my project?

Once you make the decision to use Greenstone Structural Solutions for your project, your local Greenstone Manufacturing Plant will contact you with formal approval paperwork. Payment terms and the design process will be clearly outlined to you before we begin.

Your project will be processed in the order in which it was received. Turn-around time is a function of demand and complexity of the project.

The panels can be delivered directly to your job site, or picked up at the location your order was manufactured. Panels are typically shipped via flat-deck semi trailer – shipping rates are very reasonable due to the lightweight material. Shipping via air can be arranged by Greenstone or the Owner for remote or Northern locations.

13. Does Greenstone provide technical support once my panels are delivered?

Yes! A representative of Greenstone will be on site for first-time installer. Your representative will be avaible via phone and email to review/discuss plans and technical details with you and/or your Contractor. A detailed set of shop drawings and an assembly manual is provided for every project.
